Today we learned about the history of Kakamega from Leonard and visited the education center here. We then met up with students from Shiveye Secondary School and went on a guided nature walk through the rainforest. Ernest, our guide, showed us and named for us several of the trees and plant species and what they are used for by local people. We were also able to see several Sykes and Colobus monkeys and a few different species of birds. There was one species of trees that is claimed to be used to cure prostate cancer, while several other plant and tree species are used to treat other minor medical conditions such as sore throat, cough, joint pain, wounds and more. We talked about the affects deforestation, conservation and biodiversity of the rainforest.
