History
Ngamba Island, situated on Lake Victoria in Uganda, is home to the Chimpanzee Sanctuary and Wildlife Conservation Trust (CSWCT). CSWCT established Ngamba Island Chimpanzee Sanctuary in 1998 for the care and welfare of entrusted animals, while conserving as far as possible the ecosystem of the island.
Objectives
The sanctuary was established with the aim of ensuring the welfare of individual captive chimpanzees entrusted to its care, long-term management of confiscated individuals that cannot be returned to the wild, intervention to assist individuals in the wild when deemed necessary, conservation education of the general Ugandan public with a particular emphasis on chimpanzees, ecotourism, community participation, capacity building through training, and building viable national, regional and international partnerships on chimpanzee conservation.
Handshake’s Input
During the Uganda expedition the Handshake volunteers produced an animation about mantraps as well as a game. The game had the aim of enforcing the negative impact that paper bags have on the environment, this being a significant environmental issue within Uganda. The video production team also produced ‘A Day in the Life of’ video about the daily running of the sanctuary. This video included a commentary on the contraceptive program being run at the sanctuary in order to prevent overcrowding at the island and chimpanzees being born into a life of captivity.
