The Great Primate Handshake works across Africa to promote various primate sanctuaries at the forefront of conservation. The monkeys and apes they care for are often orphans of the bushmeat trade, victims of deforestation or casualties of snares and mantraps.
The Handshake liaises with these sanctuaries to decide what type of media content will be most beneficial to their organisation. This can be anything from short films to posters, games and websites. The content will then be used to educate visitors to the sanctuary, inform the local community, and generate funds.
In Kenya we visited Sweetwaters (a chimpanzee sanctuary) and The Colobus Trust. In Uganda we visited Ngamba Island, a unique island-based sanctuary where chimps are provided with a habitat as close to their natural one as possible.
