Soon to be Handshaker, George Tyson recently held an event to raise fund for his place on the South Africa 2009 expedition. The gig went ahead as planned on Friday night at the Viper Rooms in Harrogate to a great success, featuring three sets of live music, a raffle, and an impromptu auction later and the total takings topped £600.

People came, dug deep and donated, had a dance, showed their support, played, sang, went the extra mile, had a giggle and generally helped to make the night the success that it was.
All who attended expressed a great deal of interest in the expedition and charity; and thanks to Greg McKinney from the Handshake, a DVD of last years expedition to South Africa looped in the background offering a visual example of what the event was in aid of.

Matt Partner started things off with a blistering set of acoustic roots blues reminiscent of Seasick Steve and Johnny Cash combined. Jonathan Skinner followed with his guitar and Kelly Jones-esque (Stereophonics) vocals. Last of the night’s entertainment, Marc Oliver stole the stage with an incredible performance that stunned the crowd. Complete with a cover of Candi Staton’s ‘Young Hearts Run Free,’ Marc played his home-brewed brand of melodic and enchanting indie pop for over an hour.

All in all the event was a massive hit and rocketed the fundraising total to £1900. With only a small amount of fundraising to go, the night not only helped to bring the required total within reaching distance, but also helped to raise awareness for the organisation and promote the Handshake.
The Great Primate Handshake encourages all volunteers to hold events to raise funds for the expeditions, for more information check out our fundraising document: http://www.primatehandshake.org/fundraising/guide_to_fundraising.pdf
