Can You Help The Barbary Macaques?

The Barbary macaque (Macaca sylvanus) is the only remaining primate species in Africa north of the Sahara desert, with populations in Morocco and Algeria. It is also the only primate species in Europe, with an introduced population still present in Gibraltar. The species has declined dramatically in recent years, and is therefore classified as Endangered, with threats including habitat destruction and the pet trade.

One organisation working tirelessly to protect the Barbary macaque in Morocco is Barbary Macaque Conservation in the Rif (BMCRif), which implements education and awareness initiatives and outreach programmes, lends expertise and ideas to the fight against the Barbary macaque pet trade, and works to conserve the remaining wild populations of Barbary macaques.

These activities require consistent and substantial funding, so BMCRif needs your help to secure this, and secure the future for the Barbary macaques.

If you are able to make a donation, or if you have any fundraising ideas, please contact BMCRif:
