Uganda 2010

Uganda Volunteers 2010

The Uganda expedition started on Friday 2nd July and ended on Thursday 29th July.  The education team are comprised of Ellie Sowerby, Suzanne Wright, Jade Allen and Abbie Parker.  Continue reading to hear their thoughts and feelings about the handshake and the work they were involved in.

Ellie

Hello, I’m Ellie!  I’m on the education team for the handshake project in Uganda 2010. We have started our introduction to the handshake today. I am hoping to develop some educational material for the website over the next month, that can also be used in a classroom environment in local schools.

Jade

Hey I’m Jade I’ve come on the trip with my friend who came to Kenya last year. I’m on the Education team and although I know very little about the media side I’m hoping to learn a lot over the next month. I’m currently doing a psychology degree and am very interested in the ethical issues of using primates in experiments, I hope to raise awareness of this and be able to take a lot of information back home. I’m really looking forward to learning new skills and working with different people over the next month.

Suzanne

Hello, I’m Suzanne and it is day one of the expedition. I’m here as part of the education team and hope to make a difference in teaching children in understanding the importance of conservation. So keep looking on the web as we’ll be constantly updating!

Abbie

Hi I’m Abbie, I stumbled upon the Great Primate Handshake website when looking for a primate conservation expedition that was not only an exciting experience but one which was productive and helped contribute to primate conservation.  The Great Primate handshake offers a unique opportunity to take a practical approach to conservation working with primate sanctuaries helping them achieve their goals.  I have a biology based background and joined the Great Primate Handshake expedition education team to learn about the work of the primate sanctuaries within Uganda to aid my postgraduate degree in Primate Biology behaviour and conservation.  This is a fantastic opportunity and I can’t wait to get fully involved and gain a broader understanding of how the sanctuaries we will visit work, their aims for primate conservation and how we can use this information to help educate others and spread the word!
