The Great Primate Handshake’s first expedition within South Africa has now come to an end. It has been an action-packed month of travel, team bonding, digital media production and most importantly conservation.

The anthropology team set out to investigate conflicting attitudes towards non-human animals, specifically other primates, in a range of contexts in South Africa. We were also charged with observing the work of TGPG, assessing the impact of digital media on generating awareness of conservation issues and initiatives.

The video team aimed to raise awareness of the conservation work being undertaken by certain primate sanctuaries across South Africa by producing short, informative videos. The team has also created works which portray the details of the expedition itself and these, in turn, will raise awareness of the sanctuaries visited.

Today, along with a few others, I went to C.A.R.E, Centre for Animal Rehabilitation and Education. C.A.R.E was founded in 1989 by Rita Miljo, a woman who today, I discovered to be a fascinating and extremely passionate person, and whose unmistakable love and respect for animals, particularly baboons, moved myself and the others who have been blessed enough to be in the presence of her and her ‘little people’.

Whilst we have been staying in Tzaneen we met up with Lisa who works at the VMF. She has started a new project designed to encourage enrichment and stimulation between humans and vervet monkeys. Lisa has begun editing some of her work and has been making effective videos to support her scheme.
