This bespoke expedition offers you the rare chance to work onboard a fully equipped overland vehicle, equipped to provide you with the professional equipment, hands-on training and skills necessary to personally support South Africa's primate sanctuaries
and conservation programmes. No previous technical or media experience is required.
Those with a desire to learn technical media skills will find the expedition invaluable.
The Great Primate Handshake is particularly suited to those with an interest in:
Primate conservation & wildlife
Video production & film
Anthropology
Website & graphic design
Community development
Using digital media to effect change, the Great Primate Handshake aims to:
Raise awareness of an event participant's current and/or future work & initiatives
Support the creation of sustainable fundraising activities/methods
Enhance educational programmes through local and international capacity building
Teach volunteers the skills required to produce interactive digital media to continue
supporting sanctuaries and organisations into the future
The anthropological element of the Great Primate Handshake will assess attitudes
towards primate conservation in South Africa and consider the impact of digital media on raising awareness of the needs of primate sanctuaries and local people who coexist with non-human primates in the wild. There is the opportunity for anthropology undergraduate and/or postgraduate students to gain valuable practical experience of conducting ethnographic research which could be used as data for future dissertations.
You can now apply for the South African Great Primate Handshake expedition. In the near future this website will also serve as a fundraising tool for confirmed volunteers; each with their own individual page, volunteers will have an online donation facility, and their own space with which to post their fundraising news - or ideas - designed to help anyone
make a difference to primate conservation.
